Where to Rent Quality Camera and Audio Equipment for Video Production in Victoria BC?
As videographers in Victoria BC, we’re always looking for the best equipment for filming in Victoria.
Our crews can be out shooting 3-4 times a week and we don’t have the luxury of waiting for rental gear to be shipped in from the mainland. That’s just one of the many reasons why we like to support local and rent from Victoria’s top equipment rental houses.
Here’s Surf and Stone Studios’ list of the 6 best stocked video, lighting and audio equipment rentals Victoria has to offer.
We acknowledge that we live, work and create (and rent camera equipment) on the traditional territory of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ nations.
1. Digital Cinema Rentals
When on the hunt for equipment for an upcoming video production, Digital Cinema Rentals is always our first choice in Victoria. DCR has an extensive catalogue of cameras and lens rentals, audio equipment and lighting gear. But what really sets DCR apart is Kelly… Kelly from DCR goes above and beyond with free in town delivery and the widest pickup time on the Island to make sure you’ll have the gear you need, when you need it.
We rent everything from lights, audio equipment and have recently loved using DCR’s motorized Slider on a number of our local Vic shoots and recently used it on the Belfry Theatre’s Our Season Launch video to great effect, to truly give the audience the feeling of what it’s like to float through the backstage wings of the iconic Victorian theatre.
2. CineVic
Since 1991, CineVic has ensured independent filmmakers in Victoria have access to affordable professional-grade film equipment. As the ‘artist-run society’ welcomes their 30th year anniversary this year, they’re celebrating with some of the best camera packages to rent on the Island!
Say Happy 30th CineVic by trying out their RED Gemini 5K 35mm Camera package! This awesome Camera rental deal includes a PL and Canon lens mount, a RED touchscreen monitor and loads more for just $500/day!
NOTE: Although CineVic’s listed rates are for members only, they do also rent to non-members at a slightly higher rate.
3. Camera Traders
Located downtown in the heart of Market Square, Camera Traders stocks a range of different Canon, Nikon and Panasonic cameras to rent. But it’s their Lens Rentals that really stands out for Videographers in Victoria. With over 36 different lenses to choose from, it’s a good thing Camera Traders has a healthy supply of adaptors, allowing you to pick and choose from their awesome selection. With rentals ranging from $10-$35/day, their wide range offers a modest price point for all levels of production.
We recently had fun with their Canon RF 24-105MM F4 for a video we filmed around Tofino at the end of summer. The lens has a great zoom range and quality image stabilization that we ended up putting to good use on a couple of handheld shots.
4. Pacific Audio Works
Since 1993, PAW have specialized in live sound and hosts ‘the largest inventory of professional audio equipment on Vancouver Island’. Priding themselves on their ability to collaborate with customers to find excellent solutions for unique audio requirements. PAW doesn’t just provide the professional equipment, but can also provide professional Sound Technicians to bring quality sound for video production.
“The show must go on!” and PAW’s 24-hour pager service for audio emergencies is a lifesaver, and one of our favourite rental guarantees on the island.
5. Croy & Co Stage. Lighting Ltd.
I have always had a soft spot for family-owned businesses, and Croy & Co. have been able to establish their family as Victoria’s lighting experts over the last 20 years. What makes this third-generation family operation unique is how hard they work to build strong relationships with their customers. Working with filmmakers, event planners, and some of the biggest theatres and performing arts venues in Victoria.
So the next time you are looking for the perfect lighting for your next shoot, hop on their website to check out their inventory or give them a call to find your next lighting solution.
6. Long & McQuade
While they are certainly no mom-and-pop operation, Long and McQuade’s Victoria rental team offers a wealth of knowledge and genuine friendly customer service that gives it a personal touch.
We broadcast a number of Livestreams in Victoria every month for educational workshops, ceremonies and events. Sometimes our broadcast crew is called out for a livestream in Nanaimo on short notice, and we love knowing that Long & McQuade is always going to be well stocked with extra speakers, sound boards and XLR cords for our streaming needs.
TIP: Always pick up extra XLR cords – you can never have enough!
